Step-by-Step Guide of Using a Car Jack

How do you change a tire with us at Welborn Chevrolet of Rome? Here are some step you can use in case you are stranded in the Adairsville area:

  • First, you will need to park the car at ground level, preferably on pavement. Never use a car jack on grass or on dirt for safety reasons.
  • Then, place wheel wedges, wooden blocks, or bricks behind whichever tires will remain on the ground.
  • Engage the emergency brake and put the vehicle in park. If your vehicle has manual transmission, put the vehicle in first gear while engaging the parking brake.
  • Consult the owner’s manual to determine where the jack should be placed on the vehicle. If you need to lift only one wheel, lift the corner of the vehicle. If you need to lift the front or rear, lift from the center of the frame in the front or the rear.
  • There are two different jack options: scissor and hydraulic. If you have a scissor jack, insert the rod and crank. If you have a hydraulic jack, insert the handle into the jack’s body and pump the handle. Lift the car to the height you want.
  • Place the jack stand under the car frame, place it at the pinch weld (a reinforced point on the frame of the vehicle)
  • Lock the height of the stand after adjusting it (Adjust the height of the stand (using the pin, screw, or pawl, depending on the type of jack stand you have).
  • Use the jack to lower the car until it is secure on the jack stand.
Once the car is resting on the jack stand and then remove the jack. Push on the car gently to make sure it is secure.
  • After you’ve done the work on your vehicle, use the jack to lift the vehicle a few inches, and then remove the jack stand.
  • Lower the car gently, then remove the jack.
  • Pickup any wheel blocks that you placed earlier.
