How to Remove a Car Battery

Mechanic Removing Battery from Car

How to remove a car battery is easier than you might think. Car batterie themselves are heavy, but once you remove one, they’re easy to pop right out. Learn how to remove a car battery below before learning about how long car batteries last and how to remove corrosion from your battery after removing it.

Before Removing a Car Battery

Make sure that you’re wearing insulated gloves and that you’re wearing safety goggles before working on removing a car battery. Never attempt to remove your battery when your car’s running, and make sure it’s off.

We also recommend these steps:

  • Cover the positive battery cable end with a cloth once it’s removed to avoid the risk of metal-to-metal contact.
  • Use zip ties to keep cables in their proper places. You don’t want your cables to touch because of the risk of sparks and even explosions.
  • Don’t wear any jewelry or metal to help avoid electrocution.
  • Work outside or in a well-ventilated area/garage.

How to Remove a Car Battery Step-By-Step

Before anything else, we recommend checking your make and model’s user’s manual for any specific information about your vehicle’s battery.

  1. Turn your car off, open the hood, and find the negative battery terminal on your battery. It should have a black plastic cover and/or a minus sign, but some may vary.
  2. Find the bolt head of the negative terminal and, with a wrench or pliers, hold it steady.
  3. Use another set of pliers or a wrench to remove the nut.
  4. Pull off the negative cable and place it safely away from the battery.
  5. Repeat the above steps for the positive cable and be careful to ensure that the two battery cables do not touch!
  6. If your battery is held by a securing bracket, use your pliers or wrench to take out the screws and bolts that hold it in place.
  7. Lift the battery straight out of the bracket. The battery will be heavy, and it’s important to hold it steady and far away enough from your body. You don’t want any potential battery acid to come in contact with your skin.

How Many Volts is a Car Battery?

There are 12.6 volts or higher in a fully charged battery. When the engine is running, Dalton and Adairsville drivers should expect 13.7 to 14.7 volts.

Are you learning about removing a car battery because you’re concerned that your battery is having difficulty holding a charge? Here’s a rough test for seeing if your battery is holding its charge:

  • Start your car and turn on your headlights.
  • Your battery may not be holding as much voltage as it should if your headlights are dimmer than usual.
  • If the lights get brighter when revving the engine, your alternator may be producing some current, but not enough current when idling to keep the battery charged.
  • If your lights are normal when both on idle and when revving the engine, your lights are probably working just fine.
